Faq - Frequently asked questions about Thermacare®

Here you will find a list of the most frequently asked questions about ThermaCare® products, how they work and how they are used.

When can I use ThermaCare® HeatWraps?

You can use ThermaCare® if you have non-specific back, shoulder and neck pain or menstrual pain.

When should I not use ThermaCare®?

Do not use ThermaCare® on diseased, injured or damaged skin, on bruises and swellings that have occurred in the last 48 hours.

Can ThermaCare® be used by diabetics?

Diabetics should always consult a doctor first to find out whether they can use ThermaCare®.

Diabetes is a complicated disease which, on the one hand, makes the skin less sensitive to pain. In the event of skin irritation, a diabetic may not realize that the skin is irritated and that the wrap must be removed. On the other hand, diabetes increases the skin’s sensitivity to heat, i.e. heat levels that are tolerated by normal skin can trigger burn symptoms in diabetic skin.

Who should not use ThermaCare® without prior medical advice?

If you have circulatory disorders, diabetes, heart disease or rheumatoid arthritis, or if you are pregnant, you should not use ThermaCare® until you have sought medical advice.

Can ThermaCare® be used during pregnancy?

ThermaCare® HeatWraps can also be used during pregnancy after prior consultation with a doctor.

Can ThermaCare® be used during breastfeeding?

We do not have any data that could point to ThermaCare® HeatWraps causing problems during breastfeeding. Since the skin of infants is very sensitive, it should at no time touch the heat wrap. If you have concerns about using heat products while breastfeeding, please seek medical advice before use.

What should be considered when using ThermaCare© if you are 55 years or older?

The risk of burns increases with age and physical sensations may diminish or change. These changes can occur because blood flow to nerve endings, the spinal cord, or the brain is reduced. The spinal cord transmits nerve signals from the site of injury and the brain interprets these signals. Indeed ThermaCare® should be worn over thin clothing for those over the age of 55 and not while sleeping. Check your skin several times during use. If you notice irritation or a burn, remove the product immediately.

Are ThermaCare® HeatWraps suitable for children?

We recommend that ThermaCare® should not be used by persons, including children, who are not aware of a worsening of their condition and who are not able to remove the wraps themselves if they cause discomfort.

How often can I use ThermaCare®?

You should wear ThermaCare® HeatWraps for a maximum of 8 hours in one day and not longer than 7 days consecutively (4 days in case of mentrual)

Due to the technology used, each ThermaCare® HeatWrap can only be used once. ThermaCare® works through oxidation: after opening the airtight packaging, the iron powder reacts with the oxygen in the air in the presence of the other ingredients and thus the heat cells heat up by themselves. Once oxidation is complete after 8 hours the product cannot be reactivated and should be disposed of properly in household waste.

Please do not heat ThermaCare® products in the microwave or in the oven under any circumstances, as the heat wrap could catch fire!

How do I use ThermaCare®?

The ThermaCare® HeatWraps are removed from the airtight packaging for use, the protective film removed and attached to the painful area on the bare skin with the adhesive surfaces.

You do not stick the ThermaCare® HeatWraps for menstrual pain on your skin, but in your underwear .

You also take the ThermaCare® HeatWraps for back pain out of the package, unfold it and then place it around your body directly on the skin. Fasten it with the hook-and-loop fastener and pull it to size. See our application and functionality page for more information.

Can ThermaCare® also be worn at night?

ThermaCare® can also be worn at night. Medical data have shown that after using ThermaCare® at night you wake up with pain relief throughout the next day, reduced muscle stiffness and disability and much more trunk flexibility.

If you are younger than 55, you can also wear ThermaCare® at night or while sleeping. From the age of 55, the thickness of the skin decreases and the risk of burns increases. Therefore, users 55 years and older should not use ThermaCare® HeatWraps at night.

Can ThermaCare® be reused?

ThermaCare® was developed as heat therapy with long-lasting effect for pain relief and relaxation of tense and cramping muscles. Due to the technology used, each HeatWrap can only be used once. ThermaCare® works through oxidation. After opening the airtight package, the contained iron powder reacts with oxygen from the air, generating heat. Once oxidation is complete, the product cannot be reactivated and should be properly disposed of in household waste. ThermaCare® must not be heated in the microwave or oven, as the heat wrap could catch fire.

How long can I wear ThermaCare® HeatWraps?

Check your skin several times during application. If you notice irritation or a burn, remove the heat wrap immediately. Please read the complete safety tips and instructions for use on the packaging.

How does a ThermaCare® HeatWrap work?

Heat is generated by oxidation in the heat cells. ThermaCare® offers effective pain relief for minor muscle and joint pain as well as menstrual pain caused by cramping muscles, as the heat is applied directly to the painful area. The topical, i.e. externally acting, heat from ThermaCare® helps to relieve pain and relax muscles. ThermaCare® also dilates blood vessels, which increases local blood flow and improves the removal of waste products from muscles that contribute to muscle pain.

What is in ThermaCare® HeatWraps?

The heat cells of the ThermaCare® HeatWraps contain iron powder, activated charcoal, common salt as well as water, i.e. exclusively substances of natural origin.

How is heat generated by ThermaCare® HeatWraps?

The heat cells contain iron powder, activated carbon, common salt and water. When combined with atmospheric oxygen, the iron powder generates the deep heat of ThermaCare®. This chemical reaction is called iron oxidation, which also occurs in nature.

ThermaCare® is designed to allow only enough oxygen into the cells to work together with the heat-controlling ingredients to provide consistent, comfortable heat for 8 hours. It may take about 30 minutes to reach the therapeutic temperature on the skin. Once the iron powder in the cells is completely oxidized, no further heat is generated. You can find out more about this topic in our Application and Function guide.

Can I shower or bathe with ThermaCare® HeatWraps?

You must refrain from showering and bathing while wearing ThermaCare® products. Also, please do not wash or moisten the heat wrap as this may render the heat cells ineffective. However, normal body sweat does not affect the function of the wraps. Furthermore, excessive sweating, such as during exercise, can loosen the adhesive.

The right side of ThermaCare® HeatWraps is the darker one. It is important that the adhesive surfaces of the HeatWraps for the neck and shoulder, for localised pain and for larger areas of pain face the skin.

With the HeatWraps for menstrual pain, on the other hand, the adhesive surfaces face away from the skin and are stuck into the underwear.

The HeatWraps for back pain is folded over so that the hook-and-loop fastener on the front can be closed correctly. Read all instructions and warnings before use. Do not tear open the sachet until you are ready to use it.
